So, How many ties?

Hey everyone,
I got the basics for an analyst position:

2 Suits (Navy, Charcoal)
8 Dress shirts (White, Blue)
1 Belt (Black)
1 Dress Shoes (Black)
#? Ties (?)

1. How many ties is the basic?
2. Any color no-nos (I heard no red, what about black)?

red is perfectly fine and is one of the most popular choices... (not pure red ofc)

i personaly dont like black, reminds me of gossip girl and that stuff..

dont listen to the wso bs and myths...

pick 3 ties, and then give it some time and get some that are really good

I have 54, seriously, thanks to easy gifts when I went to prep school. Variations of blue look the best in my opinion.

You never said how many pants you have and that is BY FAR the most important. They wear out quickly just from moving around in your chair and constant wear.

You need more shoes bro. Otherwise, you will be blowing through that one pair very quickly and have to get new shoes all the time.

honestly, 3 suits and 3 pairs of shoes would last forever if rotated right

also, count on something to wear under the shirt, matching the colour... cheap but effective

Yeah, 3 should be plenty. He only has one at the moment though so there's no rotating going on.

agreed on more shoes. They will get destroyed if you wear them every single day. I personally have ~40 ties since I just like being able to change it up and people always get them for me as gifts. Red ties are fine. My collection is mostly red, all shades of blue, a couple purple, a few not too attention grabbing greens, yellows, a couple orange. Don't have anything that has major designs since I like more basic ties with subtle patterns.

I'm the same - have maybe 30-40 because I get them as gifts, buy them when they're deeply discounted, etc. I would say buy enough to wear for two weeks, so I guess 8-10 if you wear a tie every day but fewer if you don't. Avoid bright colors if possible, including bright red (at least when you're starting out). Once you spend some time with your group you will get a better sense of what ties are appropriate and then you can buy more later.

Also agreed on everything else here, specifically that you need way more shoes than that. I personally rotate 7 pairs of dress shoes (plus a few pairs of boots to wear when it's raining, like today) but I've also bought those over the last 4 years and not all at once before I started working. Three pairs of black cap toes, two brown brogues, and two pairs of loafers is what I've found useful, although I definitely wear the black cap toes the most.

I would buy at least three pairs of shoes to start and try not to wear them same pair multiple days in a row. Also buy shoe trees and always put them in your shoes when you store them in your closet. This will help to make them last much longer.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

Now John, you've got to wear clothes in proportion to your physique. There are definite do's and don't good buddy of wearing a bold-striped shirt... a bold-striped shirt calls for a solid colored, or a discretely patterned suit and tie.

not to thread jack, but whats the verdict on paisley/more intricate design ties (all zegna, not crazy colors either) in the office.I have a few nice stripe/more conservative ties as well.

Blues, reds, and yellows do nicely. It depends on what you are wearing it to. Also, some ties don't look good on people because it doesn't go with their skin tone. For example, I have an olive skin tone and some green ties make me look sick.
