Sport Coats
In my office, people wear either dress shirt only or suit and no tie. Rarely if ever do I see a sport coat.
Would you consider sport coats too casual for high finance / only suitable for social events or closing dinners? Looking for some opinions before I spend any money to build out the wardrobe.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, sport coats can be a versatile addition to your wardrobe, but their appropriateness depends on the specific office culture and context. In high finance, where the dress code leans towards conservative and professional, sport coats are generally considered more casual than a full suit. Here's a breakdown:
Office Setting: If your office culture predominantly features dress shirts or suits without ties, sport coats might stand out as too casual. High finance environments often prioritize a polished, formal appearance, and a sport coat might not align with that standard.
Social Events or Closing Dinners: Sport coats are more suitable for less formal settings, such as networking events, social gatherings, or closing dinners. They can strike a balance between being well-dressed and not overly formal.
Building Your Wardrobe: If you're looking to invest in your wardrobe, prioritize essentials like well-tailored suits in navy or charcoal, as these are staples in high finance. Once you have the basics covered, you can consider adding a sport coat for occasions where a full suit isn't necessary.
Ultimately, while sport coats can be stylish and functional, they may not be the best fit for day-to-day wear in a high finance office. Stick to the more traditional options to ensure you align with the professional standards of your workplace.

IMO, you wear business casual or you wear a suit. Never once have I thought a sport coat or blazer would go well with an outfit. If I'm putting on something like that, I'd rather just wear a suit.
Significantly better and more fashionable
If you're the junior and none of the seniors are wearing blazers, maybe just go with the flow.
