Suit and tie on first day of internship

Is wearing a suit and tie on your first day still a thing?

I know it varies by bank and group, and I imagine there are some geographical differences too, like London vs continental Europe.

The best advice relating to this I received was during my summer stint. Let's say you rock up in a tie on your first day. If the culture is formal that's great. If the culture is informal that's fine as well as people will simply think "hey it's their first day they're aiming to be professional". Good impressions left all around. Now imagine you don't wear a tie. If it's an informal culture people will not care. If it's a formal culture you could very easily piss off a senior just because you couldn't be bothered to wear a tie in the morning. Things really are that petty in banking. All you need to do is ask yourself if that risk v reward ratio is worth it lol.

lmao yes. wear a suit and tie. take the tie off if it becomes too stuffy or formal. easy as that.
