What are your thoughts on people who wear short sleeve dress shirts on a casual basis. E.g. We are going out for drinks or something and a friend shows up wearing one? Is it a crime against fashion?

I think they are horrible in the sense that I wouldn't wear one. I don't go on online forums and judge others though.
It depends on where you live. In the Southeast, they are acceptable, and no one would think otherwise. In the Northeast and most everywhere else, not so much.
They're awesome for some casual day drinking on the weekend and more than acceptable to wear at night in the summertime. They're comfortable, look decent, and add some much needed airflow on those hot summer days. Not sure how you can hate on them.
I'm just a college student right now, but I have always been told its a no no. It can be an exception in places like Miami or Southern California were it is warm or hot 24/7 (hot more so in Miami). I own only one short sleeve sports shirt and its white and linen. In general I think it is best to roll up the sleeves on a sports shirt.
Rolled up sleeves look more sophisticated and 'classy' than short sleeved sport's shirts.

Yes they are awful. If you are going short sleeved-wear a polo. If you want to wear a button down, and it gets hot, roll up your sleeves.

There's nothing wrong with it in principle.
There is a big difference between wearing a short sleeved dress shirt to work (standard IT gear) and wearing a short sleeved Quicksilver shirt out to the bar in the summer, especially in shore towns. I think the latter is a cool look.
They should fit nicely with the short sleeve dress pants, white ankle socks, and birkenstocks
