Undershirts

Do you guys wear undershirts under your dress shirts? I use to wear white DKNY ones which were a great fit and fairly thin but can’t find these anywhere anymore. I tried some Polo and Reebok ones but they’re too thick and shrink weird in the wash.

I’ll be going back to the office soon 3 days per week and we need to wear a suit so I wanted to pick up fresh pairs of undershirts too - does anyone have any recommendations? I’ve heard light grey ones might work better than white ones. Just trying to find something lightweight so I don’t get too hot. I’m in Canada btw.

white, always white. I'm in AM but if I hack a good enough loogie I can hit the Goldman building. (I also talk about the assets I oversee in fractions of a trillion)

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

Honestly, your best bet is to get white V-Neck T-shirt’s to wear under polos and dress shirts. I usually get a size smaller than I would typically be so it’s not baggy and showing (meaning you can see you’re wearing an undershirt). Ralph Lauren ones are good, I used to get American Apparel V-neck white shirts but I don’t know if they make them anymore.

Are you in the NY office? are we work neighbors?  I agree on the size (I'd buy XS if i could find them) I prefer crew necks tho.

Express has some good V-neck undershirts. They have them in grey or beige colorways. It hugs the body and arms well and is not loose fitting at all so it goes nicely under my dress shirts.

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned these as they are fantastic for how cheap they are (C$15 each) for several reasons:

1) the price, as mentioned, is much lower than any other sport brands like Nike or Under Armour to have access to specialized sweat-wicking material or whatever they call it

2) seamless collar, cuffs, and hems to help stay low-key below your shirt (v-neck better for wearing dress shirts with top 2 buttons undone of course too)

3) This may only help for Caucasians/East Asians, but you can get them in beige which can help blend in against your skin tone if you’re worried it’ll show from underneath your dress shirt; otherwise, they have just regular black and white too, so really shouldn’t have any issues pairing with regular white/blue dress shirts which is basically all you should be wearing in an office anyway ;)

4) As they are a t-shirt style undershirt, they’ll obviously help with pit stains more than your typical wifebeater

I loaded up on these when I worked in Hong Kong for a summer internship a few years back, where they were a godsend. For context, everyone wears a full suit and tie to work everyday (or well, at least way more people comparatively than in your new age Toronto/New York business casual office setting that is increasingly becoming the norm), and for those who don’t know, this place is fucking SCORCHING in July/August with average temperature between 30-35°C (~85-100°F) and humidity above 80%, which literally equates to a humidex factor of like 45°C/120°F+… if that doesn’t count as a vote of confidence for these undershirts, I don’t what does.

Have you ever tried no undershirt? I prefer no undershirt. I just shave my chest and armpits to sweat less. Besides when skipping the undershirt, you've got more air and breeze circulating in and out of your shirt which helps evaporate sweat faster. Most dress shirts these days are too form-fitting and tailored to have room for an extra layer. What's really going to affect the longevity of your dress shirts is how often you wash. You should be washing your dress shirts every regardless of undershirt or not.
