Wardrobe for Summer Analyst

Hey all,

Incoming 2023 SA here, really early but I won't have a lot of downtime during the school year so trying to take care of clothes now. Based on what I have seen this is what I think I am going to order considering I have nothing that I could use now. Would you guys say this suffices well / will work well in the office? Any changes I should make (More shirts, different colors,  etc.)?

Navy Suit: https://suitsupply.com/en-us/men/suits/navy-lazio…

Grey Suit: https://suitsupply.com/en-us/men/suits/grey-lazio…

I will buy an extra pair of trousers with each suit.

Black Shoes: https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-park-av…

Brown Shoes: https://www.allenedmonds.com/product/mens-park-av…

I know shoes are pricy, but everyone seems to say they will last and be worth the investment.

Shirts:

4 of each of these:

Appreciate any comments you guys have. Also any direction on ties / belts is great as well.

For Allen Edmonds... never purchase at/near sticker price. They run regular sales and even black park ave can be found on sale if you're patient. Nordstrom has Carlyle marked down for the anniversary sale if you want a brown oxford with a different pattern: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/allen-edmonds-carlyle-plain-toe-oxford-men/…

AE belts are decent on sale, I have one that's 5+ years old and still looks fine.

Go conservative with ties, just make sure it roughly matches lapel width on suit.

Also don't be scared to buy Allen Edmond Factory Seconds. You can find them at stores sometimes like Nordstrom Rack or on the AE website. I own two pairs of them and they are great.

Secondly remember to google "3 for 99 charles tyrwhitt" and click on the ad for their website to get 3 shirts for under $100. Never pay full price for their shirts they run perpetual sales.

Recommend against Suitsupply their quality is not on par. For cheaper options Indochino has pretty similar quality, and for something around the 1k mark you can’t beat Ralph Lauren suits. If you go to their flagship store you can get an OTR suit and have it tailored in store for a proper fit. Quality is miles above suit-supply and made in US or Italy as opposed the Chinese sweatshops suit supply runs.

I’d also choose Spier and Mackay over CT at that budget range personally I think the quality is slightly better and they offer genuine buttons instead of the plastic crap CT has on a lot of shirts.

My concern with indochino is that it won't fit great, but I assume I can have it tailored after I receive it? Every company I have tried on the suit for, the sizing is different. Sometimes it fits well, others terrible, all claiming to be the same size.

There are a few factors to consider.

How do these clothes usually fit you? How much you sweat? How your teams culture is?

The stuff you've listed above is a great start, but you're splurging on shoes and cheap'ing out on shirts (as a sneakerhead and lover of shoes that is what I do myself but generally it's safer to do the opposite). Others have listed better value-for-money options as alternatives to the Allen Edmonds that should work great. I'd say you can get 4 CT shirts and then perhaps get a few from Bonobos. I've found their shirts to be great. Having a full suit as a SA is imo unnecessary. Unless your team has a heavy emphasis on wearing a jacket everyday, the summer months will be too hot for you to wear a suit enough times for someone to ask you if it's the same one. And you are a SA, keep the suit for the most formal of events.

My advice is to save yourself some money and enjoy what you've earned while being in college. Gift yourself something you want from the SA check. Get that return and use the signing bonus to buy actual quality stuff for your analyst stint. Unless you just have the cash laying around, then buy the Edmonds and a nice relatively affordable suit but go to a tailor and have it altered to you.

Great, thanks for all the advice. Culture seems definitely on the more laid back side, but considering I have never spent a day in person / on the floor, I'm entirely guessing on what the dressing looks like. I'll try to get some further insight, but if you were to make a recommendations on suits, where would you lead me?

Jos. A. Bank. If you want to spend a little more for quality, Indochino also has very reliable and durable pieces. Many of my analyst friends have also recommended Brooks brothers. The key is, go to the store, try it on and see exactly how it fits you. Each retailer makes things slightly different, even when they are marked as the same size. You can make an 'okay' suit look fantastic by going to a tailor and having it altered to your size, just remember to breathe while your measurements are being taken so you don't look dyspneic every time your MD passes your desk.
