As an intern stay away from designer jewelry and purses. Dress professionally and blending in to the rest of the firm, this is not the time to try to attract attention to you with inappropriate clothes. Err on the side of being overdressed rather than underdressed.

I would also recommend staying away from open toed or heel shoes, wearing sneakers (unless that is common in your firm specifically) and anything too revealing.

Go to a business focused clothing store and ask for their stylist. They do this all day long and know the correct answer.
Alternatively, if you  don't mind spending some time in the business district: look at the ladies when they enter/exit the building (if possible even your future office) and get a first hand view of how they come across.

Pay more attention to:
- color scheme
- hemline
- overall hair and make-up (amount/style/what is ok/what isn't)
- height of heels/shoes
- age related style

Can confirm that going to a store and talking to a stylist really helps. I went to Loft to get some clothes and the lady there had really great suggestions.

For an internship - do what the other comment said - walk around the financial district, see what others are wearing and find the average. Also if it needs to be said, don't go overboard on the make up (i.e. don't look like a Russian doll)

After internship - apparently anything goes. Since nobody can say anything to women anymore, I have seen women across seniority levels wear yoga pants, frills, very short evening/party dresses, tank tops, crop tops, mini skirts on regular working days (not holiday season/Fridays).. and this is at a BB+MF I have worked at, not some random startup. I guess since I was the only one totally shocked at those sights, it's pretty common/accepted.

Good luck for the internship!
