what-makes-you-choose-one-clothing-brand

I've been exploring different clothing and fashion brands recently, and I've noticed that people often have very different reasons for choosing what they wear.

For some, comfort is the top priority. Others focus on quality, fit, style, sustainability, or price. Personally, I think the best clothing combines comfort with a design that makes you feel confident.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts:

What is the first thing you look for before buying clothes?
Do you prefer timeless styles or follow the latest fashion trends?
Has a brand ever exceeded your expectations? If so, what made it stand out?

I'd love to hear your experiences and recommendations. Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions!"

When it comes to choosing clothing brands, the most helpful WSO content highlights several key factors that resonate with professionals building their wardrobes:

  1. Fit is King: Across multiple threads, fit is emphasized as the most critical factor. Clothes that fit well not only look better but also boost confidence. Tailoring inexpensive items is often recommended over buying ill-fitting high-end pieces.

  2. Timeless Over Trendy: Many users prefer timeless styles, especially for professional settings. Brands like Charles Tyrwhitt, Banana Republic, and Brooks Brothers are frequently mentioned for their classic, versatile options.

  3. Quality and Longevity: Investing in durable items, particularly for heavily used pieces like shoes, is a common theme. Allen Edmonds, for example, is praised for its high-quality shoes that can last decades with proper care.

  4. Comfort and Practicality: Comfort is a priority, especially for items worn daily. Non-iron shirts and comfortable shoes are popular choices for busy professionals.

  5. Value for Money: Users often recommend finding deals on mid-range brands or tailoring affordable items to achieve a polished look. For instance, Banana Republic suiting on sale or Charles Tyrwhitt shirts are highlighted as great value options.

  6. Brand Experiences: Some brands stand out for their customer experience. For example, Indochino and Proper Cloth are noted for their made-to-measure services, which ensure a perfect fit after some initial adjustments.

  7. Sustainability and Ethics: While not as commonly discussed, some users appreciate brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices, aligning with personal values.

If you're building a wardrobe, consider starting with versatile, well-fitting basics and gradually adding pieces that reflect your personal style. Tailoring and maintenance (like polishing shoes) can also elevate your look without breaking the bank.

I think what you’re really asking is: How do you develop your style? The answer to this (+ budget) then dictates what brands you’re drawn to.

I’m a big textures guy and typically keep to muted/earthy tones with slightly baggier fits since I’ve got a more broader build. I’m inspired by streetwear-level comfort (you’ll never catch me in Supreme, Bape, etc.) but tend to have a bit more yuppie hipster vibe for lack of a better term. I’ll never rock a flannel but I might wear a knit cardigan or tuck in a textured tshirt and toss an open overcoat on top.

I’ve recently been really drawn to Japanese Streetwear, specially FDMTL, There’s something about the textures and the sachiko patchwork that really appeals to me. That said, I exclusively buy used clothing at 50% off and don’t go for any of the distressed pieces.

Note that when I was in finance I was the guy that skated to work and kept an extra pair of dress shoes and suit at my desk.
