what shoes?

Get black cap toe oxfords to start. I recommend spending a bit more money on a good pair because they’ll last for decades. Some recommendations from less to more expensive would be Meermin, Allen Edmonds, Carmina, Crockett & Jones, etc.

Don’t buy anything exotic until you own all the basics. Start with black leather lace up shoes with leather soles. More expensive is usually better. If you take care of them, you will be wearing them on your last day before retiring. 

Black cap toe oxford to start, leather sole. 2nd "nice" dress shoe should have a rubber sole (dainite or vibram) so you can wear in bad weather/on the road (never try to sprint in airports in leather shoes...). In terms of sales [US market]... Allen Edmonds has a big one around columbus day weekend. Meermin, Carmina, etc. usually have a web special for black friday.  

Meermin is great if you wanna go new and cheap. If you are on a student budget scout on eBay for Loake/Barker, can pick up new pairs for half price easy

I bought two black pairs of Allen Edmonds when I started: the McAllister wingtips and the Randolph penny loafers. I already had two pairs of brown dress shoes which are still in my rotation. A lot of people are prescriptive about what you should or shouldn’t get. I don’t think it’s necessary. Get whatever shoes you like as long as they are classy and not too over the top. Unless you are in a very stuffy group, you can wear brown or black. IMO, it’s good to have both.

Allen Edmonds has some good shoes 

For your first if your in nyc or anywhere that rains I’d recommend a rubber sole black cap toe Oxford from a maker like Crockett or Carmina. Allen Edmonds is fine but tbh overrated and boxy, very American.
