Wingtips?

Hi All,

So I have an internship coming up this summer (consulting with a big 4). I am already looking to pick up the standard Charcoal & Navy suits that everyone seems to recommend on here. For shoes though, I have a couple pair but they are wingtips (J&M Waverly's) and was not sure if those would fly. I have a brown pair of wingtips too. Do I need to put them on the shelf and get some cap toes, or will it really matter that much. Just wondering. I'm a MS engineering, not MBA type if it matters.

Thanks for the help.

They're brogues and they're too casual for work.

I assume you are being sarcastic, but can you explain the difference between brogues and wingtips?

All wingtips are brogues, but not all brogues are wingtips.

Brogues are defined by the visible perforations on the edges of the shoe. Wingtips are brogues that have a "W" shaped tip. That's the wingtip.

The shoes you have there are capped-toes. They are generally considered slightly less formal than wingtips. Both can be worn with a suit, but are versatile enough to also be worn with jeans. Wingtips would appear most formal with a suit, whereas capped-toes tend to dress the suit down a bit.

Don't wear wingtips get some nice cap toes from a good brand. Wing tips are not as professional. I say this all the time but good cap toe shoes are an investment.

They look fine. Here is a hint. Much like on here, no one cares what you wear. In my experience everyone sweating minutiae like this will invariably commit a much more severe fashion mistake.

Focus on your work product.
