Are funds hiring?

I've been resume dropping at all the big MM funds. I have gotten several intro calls with HR / business dev teams, who have said that they have a couple positions open and will circulate my resume with PMs. I then never hear back from them. I know the markets tough right now, so are the PMs being ultra selective on who they interview? Are these positions even open - I don't know why else HR would tell me about them. Just getting very frustrated with the process now.

I went through the process late last year / early this year. A lot of quality funds are still hiring, but i think the bar has gone up if you’re recruiting from a IB or PE background. So many people are recruiting given the layoffs / economic downturn that it is the employer’s market compared to 2020-2021 time frame.

To be honest, I think getting a lot of these interviews is just brand signaling. I worked at a top bank and MF / UMM PE so I didn’t have trouble getting the initial looks.

Biz dev does the first screen and then asks the PMs if they are interested in meeting the candidate. If you're not getting past biz dev, it's likely because the PMs hiring for a position are telling biz dev they are not interested in your profile. It's also possible you're flunking the call with biz dev and you're not aware of it.

Different PMs look for different things.. some are looking for expertise covering an industry vertical. Others just want raw analytical power and work ethic. And so on. Depending on what your resume looks like, it can take time for your resume to get to a PM that finds you attractive.

Then of course there's things like young guys with 5 different jobs in 2 years that raise eyebrows. Up to you to be honest with yourself about how clean and "competitive" your resume is.
