Asking Seniors for Reference Letters?

Ignore title, looking to do a masters after 1-2 years in associate role. Most programs require 2 letters, does it matter if I ask my vp/former associate (who now works elsewhere), or do I need to go to my MD / group head?

How have people approached this with my seniors? Especially if I apply and don't get in lol
