Balyasny modelling test

Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the process for a role at Balyasny in London and have the first round modeling test coming up. Would really appreciate any insights from those who've gone through the process recently - particularly around the format, types of questions to expect, and general preparation tips.

Thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, modeling tests at firms like Balyasny can vary significantly in format and difficulty. Here are some insights to guide your preparation:

  1. Format: Modeling tests are often administered during the interview process. You might be given a scenario and asked to complete a model within a set timeframe. For example, some tests are done in a controlled environment (e.g., a room with a computer and no internet) with a time limit ranging from 1 to 6 hours. The complexity can range from single-asset underwriting to more intricate portfolio models.

  2. Types of Questions:

    • Expect to work on financial models such as LBOs, DCFs, or M&A scenarios.
    • Some tests may include additional case studies where you prepare an investment memo or IC paper over a weekend, followed by a discussion/defense with the team.
    • Be prepared for technical nuances like 338(h)(10) elections, rollovers, or promotes, as these are sometimes included to test your depth of knowledge.
  3. Preparation Tips:

    • Practice building models from scratch under time constraints to simulate the test environment.
    • Review key concepts in financial modeling, including valuation techniques, sensitivity analysis, and scenario planning.
    • Leverage resources like the WSO Elite Modeling Package or other modeling courses to refine your skills.
    • Focus on articulating your thought process clearly, as the ability to explain your assumptions and approach is often as important as the model itself.

For more detailed preparation, you can explore resources like the WSO Prep Pack or other modeling guides mentioned in the WSO threads. Good luck with your test!

I'm getting a vibe of overreaction to anecdotal evidence. no real reason to not interview with any of the big pods unless you don't want to work at a pod at all

He could know the interviewing team and have interfaced with them over the years. There aren’t many balyasny pods in LDN.

It's highly unlikely someone has color on ~every~ BAM LDN equities pod imo, they come and go. but I guess it's possible lol.
