Breaking into S&T Desk Analyst Role (Distressed Credit) from an unconventional background?

What kind of backgrounds do desk analysts typically have? I’m trying to break in from an unconventional background (BB Hedge Fund credit risk). The work as a hedge fund credit analyst is interesting but really not practical if I ever want to move to the buy side. Thanks in advance!
