Cold Call Ex-employee for opinion on fund?

Simple question: How acceptable is it to cold call an ex-employee of a smaller fund to get an opinion on their old employer? (There is an offer on the table).

Got a review through the grapevine on a no-name basis that the PM can be difficult and screwed this one guy at some point on a payout.

Would be great to have a recent data point on this place but my network comes up dry except this one blurb.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
