Generalist HF/AM in TX & FL

Does anyone know of any good generalist teams/firms in either Texas or Florida? I want to relocate to either state within the next few years so I’m trying to figure out which firms to make connections with. I’m a generalist now on a reputable fund so I think I should be a competitive candidate but any insight on the switch from AM to HF would also be interesting.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on generalist hedge funds (HF) and asset management (AM) firms in Texas and Florida:

Texas:

  • Houston:
    • EIG: Known for playing up and down the capital structure.
    • Magnetar: Engages in distressed debt and hedge fund activities.
    • GSO: Another key player in the distressed debt space.
    • Oaktree, Fir Tree, Ares, Centerbridge, Anchorage: These firms also operate in the distressed debt/hedge fund realm.
    • Tailwater, Energy Spectrum: Focus on midstream investments.
    • SCF, CSL, Pelican: Specialize in services.
    • Global infrastructure firms: Engage in big midstream projects.
    • Generalist PE firms in LA/Denver/NYC: Also dabble in services.

Florida:

  • Miami:
    • Value Managers: There are several Florida-based value managers.
    • Distressed PE: Notable firms include Sun Capital, HIG Capital, and Bayside Capital.
    • Event/Distressed Hedge Funds: Founders/CIOs like Icahn, Tepper, Rubin, Tannenbaum/Fredman have moved to Florida.
    • Lower Middle Market PE: There are numerous LMM PE firms, though specific names are not mentioned, a database tracking Miami-based funds could be useful.
    • RX Advisory Firm: There is one in Miami that specializes in sovereign representation, though the name is not specified.

Switching from AM to HF:

  • Competitive Edge: Being a generalist at a reputable fund should make you a competitive candidate.
  • Networking: Start making connections with the firms mentioned above to facilitate your relocation and career switch.
