Hedge Fund Recruiting from IB

I will be starting in IB soon but want to switch over to a HF in 1-2 years. What does the recruiting process typically look like? I know its unstructured so am I going to be reaching out to HH or firms individually? I'm already building pitches/models and following companies so I should be okay for interviews. I am mostly interested in SMs but would go to a MM for the right PM. Should I start networking now and make it clear I want to have a shot if a spot opens up? Would love any advice on things I should be doing now or things to look out for when I make the switch. Thanks!

TLDR: What is the best way to recruit for HFs from banking

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about recruiting for hedge funds from investment banking:

Recruiting Process Overview

  1. Networking:

    • Direct Introduction via Network: This is where someone in your network sets you up with an interview. Hedge fund managers are well-connected and rely heavily on word-of-mouth.
    • Headhunters: A large portion of the recruiting process is outsourced to headhunters who primarily target bankers and research analysts. Management consultants can also be successful.
  2. Timing:

    • Hedge fund recruiting is unstructured and does not follow a strict timeline like investment banking. It's crucial to stay informed about when recruiting is happening and ensure you are in sync with the process.

Preparation

  1. Building Skills:

    • Continue building pitches and models and following companies. This preparation will be beneficial for interviews, which typically include basic questions on markets and investing, along with behavioral and fit questions.
  2. Networking:

    • Start networking now. Make it clear to your contacts that you are interested in hedge fund opportunities and would like to be considered if a spot opens up. Networking is key as most hedge funds do not post their jobs online and rely on word-of-mouth.

Specific Advice

  1. Targeting Specific Funds:

    • If you are interested in Single Managers (SMs) but open to Multi-Managers (MMs) for the right Portfolio Manager (PM), tailor your networking efforts accordingly. Reach out to individuals and headhunters who specialize in these types of funds.
  2. Staying Visible:

    • Keep in touch with your network regularly. Send interesting articles or updates related to your conversations to stay top of mind.
  3. Headhunters:

    • Engage with headhunters who have a strong track record of placing candidates in hedge funds. They can provide valuable insights and opportunities.

Things to Look Out For

  1. Recruiting Windows:

    • Be aware that the recruiting window is finite. Missing it can make it challenging to get in, so stay proactive and informed.
  2. Behavioral Fit:

    • Be prepared to discuss your passion and ambition for the hedge fund industry. Demonstrating a strong fit with the fund's culture and investment philosophy is crucial.

By following these steps and staying proactive, you can increase your chances of successfully transitioning from investment banking to a hedge fund. Good luck!

Your traditional head hunters will be the best route but also if you have people in your network. Good SM spots will be very competitive so helps to have an advantage (i.e. referral, specific industry focus) and hire on an as-needed basis so will have to be patient with opportunities. But there are a decent number of SMs that will hire from banking (typically 1-2 years in banking) and have more structured recruiting processes for Analysts so I would recommend waiting at least 6-9 months before talking to recruiters so you can say you have one full year of experience. MM hire through multiple sources including these same headhunters but sometimes also post on LinkedIn. I get a lot of random MM inbounds from lesser known recruiters / LinkedIn messages.
