HF not from IB -> PE route?

Interested to know if anyone on here would care to share of their own journey or someone they know that made it to a HF without the traditional IB -> PE -> HF route. For example if someone is at a MM trading oil products I generally imagine having a physical trading or S&T background is more useful than the path aforementioned.

And how uncommon is it? Thanks.
