Having a basic understanding of the different liability management exercises / what you can solve for, covenants, the differences between creditor and debtor engagements (depending on the shop, there can be a heavy skew towards one or the other), and knowing capital structure dynamics (what happens to a certain tranche in a given scenario).

HL does primarily creditor sides, PJT has a relatively even split between creditor and debtor engagements, and Lazard does mostly debtor although they are doing substantially more creditor work than they were a couple of years ago.
