How to Switch from Prop to HF
I'm thinking of trying to move from a prop shop to HF (or even something else with less ups and downs as far as pay), and would like to start a conversation about some ways to approach this. I'm not necessarily in a rush as this year has been solid, but...I'm always curious and would love anyone's ideas on making the switch. Do you have to somehow get in to IB for year to drill modeling and get some non-prop experience on the resume, or maybe it's ER, or something else. The reason I say this is you always see the "previous experience at IB" or something mentioning the modeling.
Any and all comments like "start networking" are welcomed. Any previous non-IB career people who made the move to HF I would love to hear what/how you approached it as well. About me: Trade a lot of markets - mostly futures. Trading own book for a 3 years. 5 years total in prop. Not a quant. Non-target school. Not really interested in getting an mba at this point.
Thanks.
(a) What bucket do you fit into - do you define yourself as global macro, FI RV etc?
(b) How much capital are you managing at the moment?
(c) What's your Sharpe/capacity or any other relevant metrics?
(c) Why exactly do you want to move from a profitable trading role?
