IB -> MBA -> SM HF?
I’ve been doing CMBS at a BB (DB/MS) for almost 2 years now and am looking to make a career change. Although the private credit or structured finance route is a better fit for my experience, I’d like to get away from company politics and work at a HF (LO or distressed preferably). Would an M7 MBA help for this or should I just be doing a ton of networking? What are the best schools for getting into an LO or credit fund?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, pursuing an M7 MBA can indeed help you transition into a hedge fund (HF), particularly if you're targeting long-only (LO) or distressed credit funds. An MBA from a top program provides access to a strong alumni network, recruiting opportunities, and the chance to pivot your career. However, networking remains critical, as hedge fund recruiting often relies heavily on connections and referrals.
For your specific goals, schools like Wharton, Columbia, and Booth are particularly strong for hedge fund placements, especially in credit-focused or LO funds. These programs have robust finance curriculums and alumni networks in the buy-side space. Additionally, HBS and Stanford can also open doors, given their overall prestige and networks.
If you're leaning towards private credit or structured finance, networking directly with professionals in those areas might yield faster results. However, if you're set on a broader career pivot or want to maximize optionality, an M7 MBA could be a valuable investment.
