Moving to a HF soon where industry team is me and my sector head. Someone told me that I should try to take vacations when he is vacation but not sure if that is the move because then there would be no one covering. I'll continue to check emails and be plugged in but is it ok to take say a week off after 6 months in the job?

IMO work your ass off when you are working but just take all available vacations … it's not going to impact your bonus. You may even come back to work more refreshed and effective
Sounds like a beyond horrible idea...
You should take time off and give your PM/Head-analyst a heads up so they know they will on their own during that time and ask if there is anything routinely they seek you can create ahead of time. But yes please take your vacation, worst thing is a grumpy analyst when its "fire-drill" or "war time", just makes others more grumpy.
