Juniorization in HF industry and implications
Platforms have driven the juniorization of the industry to the next level. I have seen kids with 1 year experience being hired.
What are the implications for Junior PMs and more junior PMs? What do guys do with 10-15 years experience who don’t have a seat? Seems an extremely binary market dominated by juniors and Senior PMs.
HFs have hired kids with 1 year experience for 10+ years now? all the tiger cubs used to hire 1 year IB students for immediate starts, no?
Maybe recently, def not 10y ago…
No, this definitely happened 10 years ago. IB analysts with 1-2 years of experience doing on cycle HF recruiting was the norm. Was in that process, as were the analyst classes before me
Not sure I agree. In the pod model at C: you have PM / analyst / snr assoc / assoc. if you’re 10-15 yrs in and not a PM, you’re probably an analyst running a sleeve. At an SM you could be senior analyst or sector head or whatever
We had this discussion last week. I concur when it comes to incremental hiring. Either you are a junior and will have plenty of opportunities. I think once on PM level last option is pods for a lateral move. Always wonder what ex-pod PMs are up to, options seem very much limited after.
