MFPE is not happening, even LMM PE would be very tough without transaction experience. Not many SM are hiring and those that are tend to take IB or IB+PE candidates with no MBA. If they do have an MBA they likely had that background before.

long story short, you are better off spending two years networking to get to a SM than getting an MBA and for the age old question of can you get to post-MBA PE without pre-MBA PE experience there are a ton of threads on that.

if your dead set on PE you are better off trying to get into IB right now. You can probably get to a SM from MM but its going to take some work.

Thanks so much for the color. Does elite background help? I.e. HYPW, top MM, HSW MBA? Also seems like a lot of SMHF hire out of MBA, but is that more of an older thing, not happening as much now?

For sure, that always helps. Though the HSW MBA may be less impactful to your SM chances given your elite background. Yeah, most SM really hire out of IB + PE, but every one is different. Take a look at the background of the analysts and that gives you a good idea. For example, you aren’t getting into Pershing Square no matter how much you network, they havent hired a non-PE candidate in the last decade. Also, SM hiring is tougher now than it has been in the past, all of the SM money went into tech funds (Tiger, Whale Rock) and has now fled the space to where you are in MM HF
