Multi-Strat HF interview prep

Hi,

2nd year analyst at a credit fund preparing for hedge fund interviews. My target funds have flexible mandates, but are largely credit-focused multistrats.

How do I prepare?

I’m brushing up on accounting, bankruptcy/rx/LME, and practicing my modeling skills. Anything else come to mind? Brain teasers? Credit/stock pitches?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key areas to focus on for your hedge fund interview preparation:

  1. Accounting and Financial Statements:

    • Ensure a strong understanding of the three primary financial statements. Mistakes in this area can be detrimental as accounting is fundamental to any modeling exercise.
  2. Bankruptcy, Restructuring (RX), and Liability Management Exercises (LME):

    • Deepen your knowledge in these areas as they are crucial for credit-focused roles.
  3. Modeling Skills:

    • Continue practicing your financial modeling skills, including DCF, M&A, LBO, and Comps.
  4. Stock and Credit Pitches:

    • Have 1-2 solid stock or credit pitches ready. Be prepared to defend your pitches and address any holes that interviewers might pick at.
  5. Brainteasers and Mental Math:

    • Practice brainteasers and mental math questions. These can include logical problems, market sizing questions, and mental arithmetic (e.g., 23x23). Resources like "Heard on the Street" can be particularly useful.
  6. Understanding Markets and Businesses:

    • For fundamental roles, read other people's pitches on sites like VIC or Seeking Alpha to understand market dynamics and business operations.
  7. Technical Skills for Quant Roles:

    • If you're targeting quantitative roles, focus on honing exceptional technical skills relevant to the position.
  8. Interview Preparation:

    • Prepare for a variety of interview questions, including technical questions, your personal story, rationale for joining the specific fund, and details of relevant deals or investments.

By focusing on these areas, you will be well-prepared for your hedge fund interviews. Good luck!
