New to FactSet, why does it feel like garbage

Why does this seem so much less intuitive than Bloomberg. Half the time it feels like my hotkeys in the terminal don’t register. I feel so clunky trying to navigate anything.

Any advice on speeding up proficiency? Would love any tips people have as far as getting every bit of usability out of the platform.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s how you can improve your proficiency with FactSet and make it feel less clunky:

1. Master the Basics First

  • Training Modules: FactSet offers training resources and tutorials. Take advantage of these to understand the platform's core functionalities.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts: Spend time learning and customizing FactSet's shortcuts. This will significantly speed up your navigation. For example, set up shortcuts for frequently used functions like pulling financials, running comps, or accessing news.

2. Customize Your Workspace

  • Quick Access Toolbar: Add your most-used tools and functions to the quick access toolbar. This reduces the need for repetitive clicks.
  • Templates: Create or use pre-built templates for tasks like valuation models, screening, or portfolio analysis. This will save time and ensure consistency.

3. Leverage FactSet Add-Ins

  • If you're working in Excel, FactSet's Excel add-in is a game-changer. Learn how to use it for pulling data directly into your spreadsheets. Practice functions like FDS() to retrieve data dynamically.

4. Practice with Real Scenarios

  • Use FactSet for actual tasks like running comps, analyzing transactions, or building models. The more you use it in real-world scenarios, the more intuitive it will feel.

5. Seek Help from Colleagues or Forums

  • Many professionals have faced similar frustrations. Ask colleagues for tips or check out forums like WSO for advice on specific FactSet functionalities.

6. Patience and Repetition

  • FactSet has a learning curve, especially if you're coming from Bloomberg. Dedicate time daily to practice and explore its features. Over time, it will feel more natural.

Bonus Tip:

  • FactSet Support: Their customer support is highly responsive. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help with specific issues or to request training sessions.

Stick with it—FactSet is a powerful tool once you get the hang of it!

Factset is garbage, especially vs. Bloomberg. What are you trying to do with it? Getting familiar with the excel plugins and formulas saves a lot of time. That and building your own dashboards and trackers.

My main gripe is that navigating the platform feels like I’m wading through syrup.

Is there a way to cycle through windows on the same tab without using your mouse?

They list cntrl + tab in their menu but that doesn’t work for me so I assume I must be doing something wrong.

Their custom dashboards seem helpful, but using them bc of the above makes it feel like such a chore.

I’ve done a few trainings with their reps and it feels like they aren’t nearly as familiar with the platform as I expected which was frustrating.

Yeah man, I remember when I used factset like a decade ago and it was exactly what you're describing. I did a lot of formulas in spreadsheets in order to do proper data analysis. Not sure if they updated their keyboard shortcuts but I remember how slow it was and clicking around with a mouse was horrible.

When I was in ER I made some contacts at Bloomberg to join a beta program where we helped them standardize models for some of our coverage universe. Ended up getting our whole team free bloomberg terminals for a year. Completely changed the game and let me chat with buyside clients more frequently.

Because it is ABSOLUTE garbage hahaha. I remember using it in college and thinking it was trash then, had the unfortunate experience of touching it again last year and it feels like they haven't updated it since.
