Opportunity cost of recruiting for HF?

Posted this in the IB forum but will be starting FT at a BB soon and have been giving some thought to exit opps. My end goal is to be at a LO AM / SM HF, but I'm stuck between PE/HF and see pros/cons for recruiting for each:

PE:

More standardized process, arguably easier to prepare for and recruit into, good addendum to the resume for stability. Not in a great group though, so will primarily be shooting for MM (more likely) / UMM

HF:

Arguably more difficult to get into (due to preference for MF PE candidates), could take much longer to recruit for (which makes scheduling interviews harder). On the plus side, I have a close friend working at a SM HF that is willingly to review my models/pitches / provide me with some contacts for the process

I realize it's all subjective, but would appreciate any advice here as far as which route seems better

Why not do PE recruiting and if you don’t get an offer gear up for HF recruiting?  If you aren’t in the greatest group, sounds like both are going to be a somewhat uphill climb.

Yeah that’s smart. Have been thinking about doing this in the opposite order (recruiting for HF first) but was worried I’d just end up at a MM fund with no real path to a SM/LO if I went for PE first. Maybe I’m just overthinking it

You make zero mention about what you might like best, which should be front and center.

These are extremely competitive professions where you'll face against incredibly driven people, if you go into either of them because you read something in a forum, you are going to get chewed up by the competition.
