Quant Researcher (5 YOE) in Systematic Index Derivatives & HFT | AMA

Hey WSO,

I recently joined the WSO Mentor program and wanted to host an AMA to introduce myself, share some insights, and answer any questions you have about the quantitative trading space.

My Background: I have 5 years of experience developing and deploying short- to medium-horizon systematic trading strategies, primarily in index derivatives. I started out analyzing tick-level data and have progressed to leading a small quant team, where I manage the end-to-end lifecycle of trading strategies—from initial signal discovery to live production execution.

What I Do: My day-to-day lives at the intersection of market microstructure, statistical inference, and low-latency engineering.

  • Alpha Generation: I build predictive signals using order-flow imbalance, micro-price dynamics, and liquidity refill metrics, heavily utilizing machine learning (specifically XGBoost).
  • Production Engineering: I bridge the gap between Python research and live markets, deploying models into low-latency C++ and ONNX Runtime infrastructure.
  • Execution & Risk: I am a firm believer that theoretical alpha is useless if it gets eaten by slippage. A huge part of my work involves building asynchronous portfolio optimization engines (using linear programming) to strictly manage Delta, Gamma, and Vega constraints, effectively minimizing transaction costs and market impact.

What You Can Ask Me About:

  • Breaking In: How to transition into quantitative research or trading, especially if you are coming from a non-target or standard engineering background.
  • The Tech Stack: The reality of moving strategies from Python notebooks into C++ production environments.
  • Interview Prep: What top funds actually look for in technical rounds (probability, statistical inference, linear programming, and coding).
  • Market Microstructure: How to separate genuine predictive signals from market noise.

I am happy to answer general questions in this thread. If you are looking for a deep dive into your specific situation, rigorous technical mock interviews, or a heavy tear-down of your quant resume, you can book me through my WSO Mentor profile (just click the green "Mentor" button next to my username).
