RE: Cold-Email

Hey,

I have secured an internship with a value oriented investment partnership (it's a hedge fund), but it is for the spring and winter. I recently got an e-mail back from a fund that said my background was "impressive," but they do not have any plans of hiring interns for the summer.

Would it be too forward if I asked the GP (who responded to my email) to forward my resume to other managers he maintains a dialogue with? I have a lot of other leads, by the way.

One more question:
Do you think a manager that structured his fund in January would be open to summer interns? I know he has started the recruiting process for FT hires.

Thanks a lot, sorry for any typos.

You are the only one who can judge how comfortable you are with asking him for this. If you approach it properly, I am sure he'll be open to help you.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

Thanks, I will send him a thank you note tomorrow morning. What do you think about approaching a manager that launched in January ('14)?

He might actually be happy to have a summer intern while he gets things in order (cheaper). You could find yourself in a good position to go above and beyond in helping him get everything sorted out during his first year of operations, thus establishing a great connection with him.

Question for you. What did you find the best method for finding and applying to value oriented hedge funds? I will be seeking FT work in that space soon. For the time being I am primarily Googling "value fund " or similar, and sifting through those that are true value funds and those that are not based on their website. Did you come across any good resources and/or more efficient methods?

Same thing. Just have to keep searching and compiling a list of value-oriented funds. Gl.
