Soph Summer HF Experience? Signed SA 2026
I recently signed an offer for SA 2026 at an EB RX group, and I'm really excited to get started, but I am having more trouble finding some experience for my sophomore summer. The ideal internship would be at a HF because I know I want to pursue publics after IB. I know I'm not very useful to a fund at the moment (the most I'd be doing is research on a couple stocks and grabbing coffee for everyone), but I just want to be in the environment and learn more about the day to day function of an analyst and the fund overall.
I know some of you will call me a sweat for trying this hard for internships after signing for junior summer, but this is something I'm genuinely interested in, not just to pad the resume. Any tips on where and how to look for potential opportunities? I've tried cold emailing school alums, but I can't even get on the phone with them. Open to any advice; thanks.
To land a sophomore summer internship at a hedge fund, here’s what you need to focus on:
Cold Emailing with a Strong Pitch: Based on the most helpful WSO content, cold emailing is a key strategy, but it needs to be targeted and compelling. Include a stock pitch or a sample of your research to demonstrate your interest and capability. Hedge funds value candidates who can show they’re already thinking like investors. Use alumni databases, LinkedIn, and tools like Hunter.io to find contacts and structure your emails effectively.
Networking Beyond Alumni: If alumni aren’t responsive, expand your network. Reach out to professionals in the industry through LinkedIn or attend finance-related events. Mention your genuine interest in learning about their career path and the hedge fund space. Keep the conversation light and focus on building relationships rather than directly asking for an internship initially.
Target Smaller Funds: Smaller hedge funds are often more open to taking on interns who are eager to learn, even if they don’t have formal programs. These funds may not advertise positions, so proactive outreach is crucial.
Leverage Your Current Offer: Highlight your SA 2026 offer in your outreach. It signals credibility and shows that you’re serious about your career in finance. This can make you more appealing to hedge funds, even for a short-term internship.
Be Persistent and Strategic: Hedge fund internships are notoriously hard to secure, especially for underclassmen. Keep refining your approach, follow up on emails, and don’t hesitate to reach out to multiple contacts at the same fund.
Consider Alternative Roles: If hedge fund opportunities remain elusive, look into roles at asset management firms, family offices, or even equity research. These can provide valuable experience and transferable skills for your long-term goal of transitioning to publics.
Remember, the key is to demonstrate genuine interest and value, even if your experience is limited. Good luck!
