Helping a relative here. I know investment banks run special sits groups in credit and like GS have very good merchant arms. Does the same exist on the equities side? I don’t think they do, but checking. Thanks

You likely won't find special sits on the equity side, as situations turn 'special' typically as result of leverage (e.g. temporarily headwinds, liquidity issues, leverage raised at peak of cycles vs. refinancing timeline overlapping with troughs).
My bank has an event driven equities desk. It is mostly facilitating trading in/writing research on merger arb opportunities
