Taking holiday 2 months in
I’m starting at a pod shop and I already had a holiday booked in 2 months time. Should I cancel it? Or should I tell my PM and see what he says?

I’m in similar situation except it’s a medical procedure I’ve had scheduled for a while.. probably going to delay it so I take my time off 5 months in rather than 2
Okay, thanks. Damn if you’re not taking time off for a medical procedure I probably shouldn’t for a holiday
I’d personally fire you and get the lawyers to help me zero you out since you won’t play the IB slave roll and I can get someone who will be eager to.
I think you're a special situation where it's been booked for a while now. I would bring it up with your PM asap. Medical reasons are 100% valid imo, vacation not so much.
If you couldn’t delay the start, I’d definitely delay the vacation. Delaying a medical procedure instead of just addressing with the team before you start is a retarded move depending on the nature of the procedure.
This must be a joke.
It will be middle of JunQ earnings and u will be rly busy unless u r not in equities l/s. Why r u trying to take time off after you just start a new job? If u feel burned out from prev job i would straight up ask to delay start date.
did you not tell them when you started? i wouldnt risk it tbh esp in this market
If you made it for the middle of earnings season or a conference circuit, I would change your "holiday"
The OP posts make me wish gen z totally gets wiped by AI and their careers destroyed
ok boomer
I just had this scenario, I had already scheduled a week long trip (outside of earnings season, in a quiet period for work). When determining the start date multiple months in advance I told them I had the vacation planned and basically said that I wanted to take the vacation, and it was their choice whether I start before the vacation or after. They decided before and let me take the vacation. So they can let you do it, but I think you should have to give advanced notice. If you’re trying to tell them within a month of your start date, I don’t think it’s going to go over well
should be common sense to do this.
I went on a week long trip around the holidays that I pre-cleared well in advance and I was told it was fine that I went. We were technically still ramping so didn’t think it was a huge deal. I was mistaken - I basically got froze out and ended up leaving a couple months later.
if you still think it was cause of that vacation , explains why you didnt make the cut...
hint: it was definitely not because of the 1 week trip that they knew about in advance
Not gonna get into it on here but guy I worked for is a psycho and literally held it over me. Emblematic of the whole situation, we weren’t a fit and I ended up in a better seat where I’m much happier now.
I don’t think this is okay in the US but Europe/London might be different
Do it if you’ve already made money for your PM
The fact that people have to 1) delay pre planned vacations (and sometimes medical procedures) because it might be viewed negatively and 2) the number of people encouraging a delay just says a lot about the psychos in the industry...
Welcome to finance
My “vacation” this year is going overseas for the 4th of July - leaving after close on 7/2 and landing Monday 7/7 at 6AM. Only half day off on 7/3 since we close early.
This is very typical until you’re old unless I’m mistaken, and it was communicated to me that this is expected when I signed on.
Lol no this isn’t typical.. people need to stop exaggerating or using their anecdotes as the gospel. You’re at a firm whose culture sucks. There are firms with better cultures out there where you don’t have to miss your birthday or your wife’s 2nd marriage because you were too busy to attend the first
This is interesting that people are agreeing with you. Seems like it must differ by age. A lot of my buddies will head out to ski for the weekends or fly to Miami, but no one is taking off M-F to go hike around Colorado or go to Hawaii.
I will caveat this - I agree with you that as I age, this becomes stupider. Wife/kids come first when I am at that stage in life. But as a padawan, I don’t think I can complain too much about my setup, and most other guys I know my age (joined buy side out of UG or1-2yr in IB) have the same setup. If this is still the case in my late 20s with 6 years + of experience… that will be a different conversation. But early on, I think it’s fine, and quite frankly, if I’m fortunate/good enough to run something someday, I will probably expect the same from my juniors.
