Thoughts on specialization vs breadth of knowledge?

What types of investors tend to perform the best? Is it those with incredibly deep sector expertise (e.g. Biotech specialists with PhDs) or those who understand lots of industries, are able to see patterns between industries and understand macro and flows well enough to stay nimble and ride factor rotations?

Starting as an IB analyst soon and am trying to prepare to be the best investor I can be. Where should I allocate my time?
