Vacation Time at large SM?
Looking to jump ship to a large SM fund in the coming months. I'm sure there's nuance between firms, but what would you say are typical vacation allocations for a junior Analyst? And if you could provide color on what is considered "acceptable" or not, ie if it's looked down upon to take all available time off, etc. For context, looking at a spattering of firms like ValueAct, Eminence, D1, Viking, and others.
Thanks in advance!
Will depend on fund and how lean the team is, etc. I’ve never had issues taking all my vacation, I think when I started it was ~3 weeks (maybe 2 at the very beginning). Now I take 4-5 weeks a year (but more senior). I usually check emails, etc but rarely have to jump on a call or do that much on my time off.
I take 2 weeks over summer, 1 week over thanksgiving and the last 2 weeks of the year through Christmas. Always check emails / Bloomberg when I’m out but never do any real work. You’ll find that most people take their days off along similar lull periods as well. That way markets are quiet and you can have a holiday in peace.
