Why did the market beat your firm in 2021?

I've been curious as to why Hedge Funds weren't able to generate Alpha in 2021?

I understand some did some didn't but the data I've seen does not look great. I don't want to offend anyone by posting this either just curious as to what went wrong when the market had an insane performance.

Was it betting against the market because the fundamentals no longer make sense? Was it from shorting memes early in the year?

Elaborate please
