Would a solid l/s equity single manager hire someone with just 1yr of experience?

Currently 6mo through IB in a top group. Goal is to end up at a sm l/s equity hf, and wondering if I need to tough it out for 2 yrs (and possibly even longer by doing PE) or if I have a reasonable shot after 1yr.

Talked to a few HHs and they recommended I do at least 2 years but said they can put me forward for roles at the 1 yr mark if I want. FT recruiting will be time consuming, but if I have a good shot then I'll do it since IB is really boring and annoying.

For any of you at sm HFs, what do you think? Do you see An1s getting hired?

You're 100% wrong fyi - not common but there's a scattering of very early hires at top HFs. D1 hired someone out of EVR with 1 YOE a couple years ago for example.

Generally speaking, no, top SMs do not frequently hire someone with just 1yr of IB exp which is why when they do it's such a "wow who is this guy". D1 I read was shutting down so maybe not the best example to cite... Exceptions that happen every so often are not an example to model off of. If you want to start going down the anecdotal route then why not teach tennis? Ackman supposedly hired a coach he was intro'd to some years ago and Pershing is arguably a top 5 SM.

Edit: D1 in fact did not shut down, Institutional Investor issued a retraction for publishing the story.
