Based on the most helpful WSO content, the decision between Ashmore Group Equity Research and Nomura Investment Banking in London depends on your career goals and interests:

  1. Ashmore Group Equity Research:

    • Likely offers a more niche and specialized role, focusing on emerging markets and asset management.
    • If you're passionate about research, markets, and a more analytical role, this could be a better fit.
    • Equity research roles can lead to opportunities in asset management, hedge funds, or portfolio management.
  2. Nomura Investment Banking:

    • Provides broader exposure to deal-making, financial modeling, and client interaction.
    • Nomura's strengths in EMEA include structured finance and financial sponsors, with a focus on execution capabilities.
    • Investment banking roles are known for strong exit opportunities into private equity, corporate development, or other high-profile finance roles.

If the Ashmore role genuinely excites you and aligns with your long-term goals, it could be the better choice. However, if you're looking for a more traditional finance career path with diverse exit options, Nomura Investment Banking might be the way to go.

It depends entirely on what you want to do with your career. If you think you find Equity Research more interesting, you should do that. If you want to be an Investment Banker, choose that.

If you have no idea, I strongly encourage you to do more research to understand what you want. Admittedly, that's hard to do without actually working in the roles, but that's also part of life and you're always going to be making decisions with imperfect data.

Put a gun to my head I'd say IB offers a bit more optionality, but (working in IB myself) I'm not sure of Ashmore's reputation. I haven't come across them, but IF they're truly a top tier ER institution (and I have no idea but haven't come across them myself), I'm then more interested in that role.
