Background Check / Background Screening

I'm based in continental Europe and am currently exploring job openings in London.

Since background checks as part of the hiring process are unusual where I come from, I would like to know if this is common across all financial institutions in the UK or does it mainly apply to investment banks?

The reason I'm asking is that two of the banks I worked for in the past - one was an internship, the other was FT - don't give out any details to third parties on current or past employees as part of their company policy. So that would make a background screening conducted by a third party provider difficult I suppose. Thank you!

Interned at MM PE, no background checks were done. There was no analyst pipeline and was unstructured. Yes, most do background checks with 3rd party provider and you will be asked to send in proof of employment etc.
