Background check inquiry UK
Hi everyone, I was lucky enough to secure a summer analyst position for 2025 in London and am currently filling in my personal details for the background check.
After graduating from high school in continental Europe, I was officially enrolled in a bachelor's programme at a no-name university in my home country. I saw this as a gap year and never intended to complete the degree. However, to satisfy my parents, I attended some classes and even took some exams (but with bad grades).
After a year, I started a new undergraduate degree at a target university in the UK. I have never listed the first year of university on my CV during the SA apps - should I list it now during my background checks? Would this reflect badly on me for not mentioning it during the recruitment process? Or is it just a formality and HR would not care about the first programme?
I had a random part-time job in a restaurant during that time, so I could just list that as my employment during that time and say I took a gap year. Or I could just be honest and list my first degree. How should I approach this situation?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, honesty is generally the best policy when it comes to background checks, especially for roles in high finance where integrity is highly valued. Here’s how you can approach this situation:
Disclose the First University Enrollment:
Explain the Context if Asked:
Avoid Misrepresentation:
Impact on Recruitment:
Practical Steps:
By being upfront and framing the experience appropriately, you can address the situation without jeopardizing your offer. Remember, background checks are often more about verifying facts than scrutinizing every detail of your past.

Bump
Have you already submitted your CV? These agencies do not use their brains, they will cross check everything you have there
You don't have a degree from that place, didn't put it on your CV. There's hardly any record that you ever went to this uni. There's no need to put it on your form. Even if you did nothing during that year it wouldn't matter. Plenty of people take gap years to do random shit.
If it’s not on your CV and it’s not your current university don’t put it on
HR only really cares if you lied (said you went to Oxford but you actually went to Durham). Just put down that you had a part-time job at the restaurant. All these checks are outsourced to a 3rd party and they just check that what you said on your CV is correct. They don't have the resources to look at things you haven't disclosed.
DO NOT LIST things that are not on your CV. DO NOT LIST the year of uncompleted studies, no one cares. They only care about the ones you completed which serve as the basis for the recruitment (aka your target Bachelor's). Been in the same boat, never admitted that (except to Student Loans), no one asked for that during the background check. They only verify the info you manually enter into the form
Thanks guys, so what about the part-time job in the restaurant? It was obviously not in my CV, so should I list it during the background check or just keep the gap-year after graduating from a-levels clear?
I'd skip it if not on CV. If you list it, they will require giving them the phone number/contact details to your supervisor. Better ignore it. I also listed once some stupid part-time job and needed to waste time on giving them payslips, contacts etc. do not bother
