DCM prospects
How feasible is it to start in DCM at a BB and get to buyout PE? If hypothetically was willing to do many years in IB should they need (assuming moving groups and or lateraling). Thanks

Better chances if you move to M&A or a coverage group first
Bump
Yeah, move to M&A or cov
Need to move to M&A or coverage (or lev fin at some banks where that's a top group) but very doable, especially if you can make the move while still analyst level where you'll have the most PE opportunities
And if i end up doing dcm for 2 years and lev fin for 1?
Try to lateral into an analyst 3 role and not associate 1 so you are still getting PE opportunities. But it's fine.
If you do 2 years in DCM I would focus on M&A/coverage over lev fin so you have deal experience
Im a second year analyst in dcm at a BB and will be moving to a MM PE shop.
Its very doable as long as you crush the modeling / LBO test. You would be surprised how many of your coverage and M&A peers don’t know how to model properly.
Thanks for your response +1SB. For crafting a story, how did you spin your background to make it as relevant to PE as possible?
Did interviewers press/question about your DCM background as a potential “weakness” since it did not include typical PE modeling exposure? Thanks
