Difference in Targets for IB vs MBB consulting UK

As the title suggests, I just wanted to ask about the target unis in the UK, and in particular see if there are any differences between IB targets and MBB targets.

for context I’m doing my UG from Warwick.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are the differences in target universities for Investment Banking (IB) and MBB consulting in the UK:

Investment Banking (IB) Targets:

  • Oxford
  • Cambridge
  • London School of Economics (LSE)
  • Imperial College London (ICL)
  • Warwick (noted for good placement in both BB and EB)

MBB Consulting Targets:

  • Oxford
  • Cambridge
  • London School of Economics (LSE)
  • London Business School (LBS)
  • Imperial College London (ICL)
  • University College London (UCL)
  • Warwick (still a top target, but slightly lower in the pecking order compared to the above)

Key Points:

  • Warwick is well-regarded for both IB and MBB consulting, though it might be slightly lower in the pecking order for MBB compared to Oxford, Cambridge, and LSE.
  • Imperial College London is noted for its strong brand, especially in IB.
  • London Business School is particularly highlighted for MBB consulting.

Additional Considerations:

  • For MBB consulting, factors such as the specific master's program and the overall prestige of the university play a significant role.
  • For IB, the focus is often on the number of IB-focused courses and the university's reputation in finance-related fields.

This should give you a clear understanding of the target universities for both IB and MBB consulting in the UK.

Curious but why is MBB so elitist with regards to uni vs IB where it’s much more diverse

Also interesting how much it differs based on the office. Looking at MBB roles in DACH/Nordics for example, there’s a great mix of target/non-target Consultants
