Energy chance?

EVR and Roths both have energy postings open recently, trying to get a read on which is the better bet for upstream (E&P) deal flow.

From what I've heard, Roths has historically been strong in North Sea deals but seemed to slow down for a bit — looks like they're picking back up recently though. EVR's energy team is supposedly solid on paper, but I haven't seen them on any major deals lately.

Anyone have more insight on how either group is doing right now?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Evercore (EVR): EVR is widely regarded as one of the top Houston banks for energy, particularly in terms of deal flow, exits, culture, and prestige. While they may not have been as visible on major deals recently, their reputation and historical performance in energy investment banking remain strong. EVR is often considered a solid choice for those looking to break into energy, especially if you're aiming for strong exits or broader opportunities beyond energy.

  2. Rothschild (Roths): Rothschild has historically been strong in North Sea deals, which aligns with their global presence and expertise in cross-border transactions. While there may have been a slowdown, it seems they are regaining momentum. If your focus is specifically on upstream (E&P) and you have an interest in international exposure, Rothschild could be a compelling option.

  3. Current Market Dynamics: The upstream (E&P) sector has faced significant challenges due to pricing pressures, lower cash flows, and a shift in strategy toward generating free cash flow rather than production growth. This has led to reduced capital markets activity and slower M&A deal flow. However, restructuring opportunities and selective M&A activity still exist, particularly for well-capitalized players or those with innovative strategies.

Recommendation:

  • If you're looking for broader prestige, strong exits, and a solid Houston presence, Evercore might be the better bet.
  • If you're interested in upstream deals with a potential focus on international markets like the North Sea, Rothschild could be a strong contender.

Ultimately, your decision should align with your career goals, geographic preferences, and the type of deal exposure you're seeking.
