At my bank, HR was at every drinking event. They knew everyone's age and would give out wristbands.

Anecdotally, I heard a story of an SA at another bank who got caught using a fake and was fired for it. They weren't caught by the bar or by HR even. They just mentioned to someone they were using a fake and word spread.

You can get away with a lot of things in IB, but there is zero tolerance for things that could result in legal liability for the firm. If the police got involved, the firm could get in serious trouble since they're the host.

At my bank, several interns would get a little too drunk, but even that's not a huge deal as long as you don't puke or say stuff that would get you cancelled. But using a fake can actually get the firm in legal trouble, so they take that very seriously.

Yeah a year or two ago some intern at my bank got his internship canceled/ was fired in like the first week bc of using a fake at a happy hour event. Don’t think he got too drunk or anything, maybe he got busted trying to buy a drink at the bar or word spread. IDK how he got busted but it was a stupid idea

just go to the event and have a coke. if anyone asks you abt it just say ya i’m not 21 and don’t wanna get in trouble and lose my opportunity to come back to the firm. don’t be a retard and flex your shitty fake from IDGod to your colleagues

Depends on the workplace, where I work at, the HR did not want me to drink but the rest of the office literally told me that they'll close their eyes so they don't know I'm drinking lol. So we drank together.

If it’s a work-sponsored event do not drink. That could cost you your job. And even if it doesn’t the opportunity cost is far too great.

Think about how hard it is getting an internship in this market and whether you’d be willing to risk that for a drink.

If you want to drink, do it on your own time. I’m barely ever ID except for clubs and convenience stores (could be that this job has made me look old), so you could try going to regular bars or restaurants or have a friends buy your drinks. I don’t suggest using a fake at all as it could land you in a very avoidable legal nightmare.

I'm also going to be 19. Sucks because I feel like it will limit my ability to show a culture fit if I can't go out with the team outside of work. I know I don't HAVE to drink but so many places ID at the door and having to explain myself and ask for a wristband in front of the team is embarrassing. Not to mention if I get turned away and then it's just super awkward for everyone.

Would it really be that bad if it's an after-work thing that isn't set up by the firm/HR? Not like I would be doing it in front of my MD. Maybe with a few analysts?

People are going to know your age. Theyre not going to invite you out knowing youre 19 lmao. Maybe 1-2 analysts you get close with but play it smart, because you dont know who talks to who.

When can we expect the "Is it ok to offer coke to my colleagues as an intern?" post
