Getting no/shit work as an Intern
Currently interning at a US MM bank (think Piper Sandler/Lincoln/HW/Opco/RJ) in London, and haven’t been getting much work and when I do get work, it’s generally shit tasks that analysts don’t want.
For context; my team is very junior heavy and dealflow is dogshit, so there isn’t much to do to start with. During my first feedback session, they said that they realize that I don’t have much to do, but that they need to prioritize more “senior” juniors.
I am really bored and am not learning anything which is frustrating. I have 4 more months to go in this internship and want to make the best out of it - any advice on how to approach it?
PS: I don’t really care for conversion
TLDR: Not getting work, bored; what to do?
Read equity research and start building models off of them.
Help with industry primers.
Make yourself useful.
You're an intern so you are at the bottom of the pole so you're expected to do all the shit tasks.
BTW finance is a small industry so if you screw up / have a bad attitude, word will spread.
The ER idea is really good, didn’t consider it, will do it thank you!
In terms of being at the bottom of rhe pole, I understand that, but surely that entails at least working on a few slides on decks or making company profiles (two things which I don’t do).
Regarding attitude, they praised the keenness to work quite heavily during the feedback, so i’ll keep doing that.
I don’t show them that I am frustrated, i keep it to myself
what exactly are they asking you to do? Dataroom stuff?
Look, just treat this like an RPG. You're just grinding and building exp (and character). If you can get through this without breaking down, you know you can do anything.
What did you expect to be doing as an intern?
Making some of the slides on decks - Doing more research - being involved in meetings
Interns do not go to meetings. Heck, associates do not even go to meetings.
It's June 5th, you have plenty of time
how long has it been again? 2 months?
Yes around about that
Agree, use your time to study technicals, modelling
Also read some books at your desk or maybe in pdf form
I’m addition to technicals, Read some business books or case studies on companies. Get some Dartmouth or hbs cases and see if you can work through them
Didn’t think about that - I’ll get started on it. Thank you man!
Yess - I have been reading RE finance and investment: Risks & Opportunities by Linneman - Super insightful read, would recommend if you’re into real estate!
