Hallmarks of a strong VP

Someone made a post about a strong MD but just wanted to know if anybody had an outline of the qualities for a good VP.  Obviously there are some similarities but since VP's are also more of a bridge they may need some different qualities from dealing with a cocky HYP analyst to anger issues MD.

One thing that really impresses me about my favorite VP is how accessible he is to junior bankers. Even though he's incredibly busy with work / has a new baby, whenever I work with him he always encourages me to hop on the phone with him whenever I have a question / want to talk something through. He's very interested in cultivating junior talent and making sure that we're the best analysts we can be.

Honestly agree on this. Worked on a team with a terrible VP who made our lives hell for a bit because he was so incompetent and having 1 more person asking questions/picking out nits meant working longer and slower.

Working with this same MD now without a VP and it has been amazing - he sends us exactly what he wants, we do it, and that’s that.

I feel like most of the VPs I’ve worked with just get in the way and add an extra level of unecessary bs into the mix.

They are helpful for managing upwards and organizing the team when the MD is too busy to tell your their schedule or the plan, but generally I find working without a VP is a better experience.
