I just did the Hirevue for Goldman Sachs IBD (European regional office) and feel devastated now. Well, it was not my first Hirevue; I did the my first Hirevue for another BB frantically at 3am. I was working 110h/week in my EB internship and didn't find space at any other hour than late midnight...
Given that you have 3 days to prepare for GS Hirevue, and I had to square my impending exams with my IB prep, I spent like 5 hours on outlining bahvioral questions to past/potential GS Hirevue questions. After this, I went on rehearsing and adapting my voice to highlight specifics.. nothing different to other people's prep I would say
I did aweful though, and believe me, I'm not here for self-soothing or whatever. I prepared a team work story, success story, biggest fail and another work related story that I believed I could spin accordingly.
For the first question, I had to walk through my resume. I said what I said to other banks before and then noticed I only had seconds left to complete so I ended with saying that I wanted to join GS because they have "the best people."
Another prompt was asking for my thought process, steps, etc in a situation where a student club president would publish exam answers for the next exam. I had like 40 sec to prepare and roughly outlined in my head what I would be saying. As the video started recording, I fumbled some bullshit and often repeated myself until, after some 30 sec, I just ended the recording mid-sentence.
To not look like an complete imbecile, I endeavoured to do the rest of the recordings, which didn't go as bad as the preceeding ones but given my knowing I screwed up somewhat affected my enthusiasm.
I just don't understand how I could fumble so badly and screw up this opportunity with GS. Granted, I'm not a native speaker but normally I have no issues at all speaking English; I studied in the US for some time and do a degree at a top tier target in the UK.
I know that I was nervous. A month ago I had a superday with LZD and in the feedback after being rejected, the HR lady told me that I came across nervous.
But isn't everybody nervous in interviews? I feel like I was unable to think straight, which could explain why I fumbled so much on the behaviorals. This doesn't happen to me with technicals though.
Do you have tipps to overcome this and perform better at Hirevue/normal interviews?
Did a hirevue for my current role. Screwed up on a response on my first try, dropped an F bomb and accidently submitted instead of using the second try. Thought I was screwed but they never mentioned it and ended up getting the job.
I have been convinced that hirevues have/ will never be watched by a firm.
Hirevue is perhaps the most unethical organisation to exist after fucking Raytheon and Aramco. When you submit a hirevue, their internal software will literally output an "employability" score which is done through transcribing your answer (same tech as Siri/Google assistant), eye movement to see if you are reading off a script (leads to a ding), eye contact with the camera, tone and pitch of your voice to see if you would be a good fit based off data of employees in the firm among other things. The bias is truly incredible, and the system disenfranchises and dings people with good responses. The problem is that we will never see the software and AI used by Hirevue and what metrics they use (alongside the client firm) to perform well!
You have to realize that many of the bankers that go through these hirevues are not really paying full attention, they skim through just to see how you behave and see if you are worth a shot, meaning they could not even watch the one you screwed up in if they had skimmed through that section, as long as the majority was ok, then you're fine.
Don't sweat it. GS notoriously has the most rigorous Hirevue questions

Best thing to cure nervousness is act like you're talking to a friend (professionally). Just take breaths and remember that this is a conversation, and you're allowed to make some mistakes.

Would you mind sharing how long they rejected you after? I made some mistakes as well, would like to know sooner rather than later.
Also, had you spoken with anyone (like having a coffee) in the team before applying?
My flatmate and I both got invited to do a hirevue at GS.
I absolutely aced it, my answers were as perfect as they could possibly be, but I didn’t get invited to next stage.
My flatmate also did it and got asked the same questions. Half way through answering one of the questions she realised she was just rambling on and wasn’t actually answering the question so she said ‘fuck’ then said ‘shit sorry’ when she realised she said fuck.
Despite her not actually answering the question and also swearing, she got invited to the next round which led to an offer and I gave perfect answers but was unsuccessful.
Moral of the story, don’t stress anything can happen.
Alternative moral, never underestimate the "female card" in the IBD recruitment.
