HSBC Job Simulation - Investment Banking

Hi. Does anyone have any insights on what type of video responses they'll be seeking in the HSBC job sim for investment banking internships?

I did the practise sim in their candidate zone and there was literally only 1 video response question which was so straightforward ("what did you learn from this simulation?"). I'm guessing the real thing isn't as generous, but I'm not sure to what level I should prepare. Answer to why HSBC/this division? Commercial awareness (deals/recent news)? Behavioural STAR stories?

Thanks for any insights.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, the HSBC Job Simulation for investment banking internships typically includes a mix of multiple-choice questions, written responses, and video responses. Here’s what you can expect and how to prepare:

  1. Video Responses:

    • The video response questions in the real simulation are likely to be more challenging than the practice version. While the practice question ("What did you learn from this simulation?") is straightforward, the actual assessment may include:
      • Behavioral questions (e.g., STAR method stories about teamwork, leadership, or problem-solving).
      • Questions testing your alignment with HSBC's values: Dependable, Open to New Ideas, and Respect. Always choose ethical and thoughtful responses, even if they seem more challenging.
      • Commercial awareness questions, such as discussing recent deals, market trends, or why you are interested in HSBC and the investment banking division.
  2. Preparation Tips:

    • Why HSBC/Why Investment Banking: Be ready to articulate why you are drawn to HSBC specifically (e.g., its global presence, focus on sustainability, or recent initiatives) and why investment banking aligns with your career goals.
    • Commercial Awareness: Stay updated on recent HSBC deals, market trends, and industry news. Be prepared to discuss how these align with HSBC's strategy or values.
    • Behavioral Stories: Prepare STAR stories that highlight your skills in teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability. Tailor these to scenarios relevant to investment banking.
  3. Other Sections:

    • Multiple-choice questions may test basic math, financial concepts, or situational judgment.
    • Written responses could involve analyzing a case study or providing recommendations based on a scenario.

The key is to remain calm, professional, and aligned with HSBC's values throughout the simulation. Good luck!
