If I get sent an excel test from the corporate recruiting email address of a firm does it mean my resume is actually being considered for the role?

Applied to NB as a Portfolio Analyst in London and got an automated email from them with an Excel Assessment, sent from some corporate recruiting email address. I have had previous situations where I get excited because I take it as this means I'm moving forward in the process and then I work hard on the excel assessment and never hear anything back anyway. All the email says is "Thank you for applying. The next step in our recruiting process is an excel assessment" blah blah blah. It doesn't say, you've been selected to move forward to a case study or anything like that.

Does anyone have experience with this? Do you normally hear back from firms you applied to online after doing these assessments that get sent to you from automated emails? Or am I just wasting my time doing it if I haven't heard from a real person yet?
