Incoming IBD SA/A - better off in a generalist program or being in a specific group?
Hey everyone here,
I saw a lot of discussions about group placements and all that. At the level of SA/A1 in IBD, is there a material difference between being in a generalist program or being in a specific coverage/product group. I’ve heard people saying that being focused at one kind of product/one industry gives you better chances of exits and expertise. But how true is it/how does it weigh against being in a generalist program where presumably you’ll be able to learn from different settings? Thanks a lot and appreciate any response.
What firms are you looking at with true generalist programs? I can't speak for EB/MM but BBs call their hires "generalist" and then do placement later on.
M&A is industry agnostic but still goes through placement. This is a coveted group but moreso for modeling/deal experience than being generalist.
Thanks for your help! I will be at a US BB this summer and they claim they are running a generalist program, with each pool covering a few industries together at one time. I’m at a major Asian city and can confirm my seniors was placed in pools with different sector groups staffing them. What do you think?
I've never heard of that, it must be specific to Asia. Can't really comment as in the US groups are set upon entry. I'm sure you'll get a lot of modeling experience covering so many sectors though
