Seems like with my non target and bad gpa background the MF / UMM path will be impossible according to this site, therefore if I was to work at a decent MM for one year or two years can I lateral to UMM/MF

Despite what people would tell you on here, this can absolutely be done under the right circumstances. It would require developing genuine relationships with people and perhaps being in the right place right time, but yes this can be done.
